Provision & advising

Assistive products are provided according to legislative measures in the areas of social, health, occupation, school and education. It therefore varies where you should turn to in case of the need of an assistive product.

One of the core principles in Danish policy on disability is the principle of sector responsibility. In the field of assistive technology, the principle implies that the sector where a need for an assistive product arises is obliged to provide and finance the assistive product. Thus, assistive products are provided according to different legislative measures in the areas of social, health, occupation, and school and education.

The social area

Application for assistive products according to the social services act must be made via online self-service on the webpage borger.dk/handicap (in Danish), where you also find information on the regulations for the provision of assistive products, consumer goods, and car and home adaptations.

If you are not able to apply online via borger.dk or if you are applying on behalf of another (and if this is not feasible online), you must contact the citizen service office or the assistive products department at your local authority.

The local authorities are obliged to offer advice and guidance to citizens on the possibilities for provision of an assistive product or consumer good or on other possible options for alternative support in stead of or as a supplement to an assistive product or consumer good.

The health area

As part of the course of evaluation and treatment, equipment for treatment/assistive products are provided by the region according to the legislation on health matters.

Sometimes doubt can arise as to whether the hospital or the local authority has to finance and supply the equipment for treatment/assistive product. According to the departmental notice on demarcation (in Danish), this must not come to harm to the citizen. It is therefore the authority with the closest contact to the citizen that in the first place has to supply the necessary equipment for treatment or assistive product. The question of financing can be resolved afterwards between the authorities involved.

The occupation area

Persons with disability or a temporary limitation in the ability to work can be granted assistive products if the disability or limitation in the ability to work implies barriers in connection to a certain assignment or in taking part in initiatives according to the Act on active employment initiative.

The spending allocation competence of assistive products in the area of occupation lies with the job centre in your local authority. Assistive products can be granted as a loan or a subsidy. Find your job centre on info.jobnet.dk/mit-jobcenter (in Danish).

The school and education area

In primary school, special teaching materials and necessary assistive products must be provided by the school for pupils receiving specialist training and other special needs education.

In other schools and educational establishments, special teaching materials and necessary assistive products are provided for the pupil or the student after application and grant from the Authority on Education and Quality (in Danish). The school or educational establishment must apply on your behalf to the Authority on Education and Quality.
