Assistive technology products

Definition

The ISO 9999:2011 definition of an assistive product is:
Any product (including devices, equipment, instruments and software), especially produced or generally available, used by or for persons with disability
- for participation;
- to protect, support, train, measure or substitute for body functions/structures and activities; or
- to prevent impairments, activity limitations or participation restrictions

Assistive products in the legal frame

According to the terms of the Danish Social Services Act there is a legal distinction between assistive technology products and consumer goods.
Assistive technology products are products that are manufactured with a view to alleviate a physical or mental disability. Consumer goods are products that are manufactured with a view to customary use among the general population and with a wide commercialization.
Both assistive products and consumer goods can be provided by the local authority but with different consequences regarding economy and ownership.
